Ibiza, Spain

I’m sitting under an umbrella on one of the many beaches of Sant Antoni, Ibiza. The umbrella is here because I got too much tan while swimming yesterday in the clear blue waters that surround this island. It’s my last day here and I don’t want to leave this place. We had a hard time leaving our hotel room just because it was one of the steps of our departure, even though the hotel itself has very little to offer compared to what’s outside. Frankly, I should have visited this place earlier. Everything here is designed around making your life more convenient and carefree. The nightlife area of Sant Antoni is right in the middle of this tiny city.

Yesterday we explored the town and went to the beach to rest from the night before. The water at the beaches of Sant Antoni are rather dirty and filled with algae, but if you take a 15 minute bus ride to a place like Cala de Compte, you will be welcomed by the warm sea, in which you can see the sandy bottom and frolicking tropical fish even when you’re deep enough that you can’t touch the ground with your feet anymore. This is a way to spend your summer.

San Antoni is really a tiny city. I don’t think it could have more than two postal codes, as it takes no more than 10 minutes to walk from one of its edges to another. For this reason last night  we went to explore Eivisa to the south of the island. It’s classier fun than Sant Antoni, and somewhat less out in the open. Simply walking around it could be quite boring unless you really want to buy some clothes or trinkets. The fortress at the end of the port is an amazing place to explore, though.

Normally Euros are a very tricky currency here. Each time you buy something, you feel like you’re spending very little and getting a great deal, but by the end of the day you still spend more than you were meaning to. That problem doesn’t exist in the Eivissa fortress, because everything quite plainly costs a fortune.

Even with a moderate budget, this place still caters to your every whim. I came here to discover it and figure it out, but instead it wrapped itself around us and our stay became all about us. I suppose that’s what makes it special.
